Get To The Chopper! Using Vehicles in the G.I. JOE Deck-Building Game

For many of us, G.I. JOE just isn’t G.I. JOE without the vehicles. Helicopters, tanks, and submarines, sure, but that isn’t all. Hovercrafts, heavily-armed snowmobiles, and even a SPACE SHUTTLE all made appearances piloted by members of the G.I. Joe team, and the upcoming G.I. JOE Deck-Building Game continues that proud tradition!
In the G.I. JOE Deck-Building Game players assemble their team of Joes, and load them into a variety of vehicles to go take on Cobra and their minions. You’ll always start with the VAMP (Vehicle, Attack: Multi-Purpose) parked in your hangar and ready to roll. It will serve as your trusty fallback when a better-suited vehicle isn’t available. Able to bring up to four Joes on any mission, it has the important distinction that it returns to the hangar upon use every time, unlike the other more-powerful vehicles.
Sometimes the VAMP just won’t cut it though! When facing a Story Mission like Secure the Rare Volcanic Element, you’ll need every possible edge to pull out a win and prevent an appearance by the dreaded Storm Shadow. With six hits needed to succeed, a VAMP full of regular Joes just won’t do. On the other hand, fielding the Skystriker XP-14F, piloted by Airborne and Ace will give you a total of 11 dice with which to roll the necessary hits. This is because the chosen vehicle matches the mission's terrain type, therefore triggering the Skystriker’s +3 Wild Skill ability, as well as Ace’s +1 Wild Skill, plus +1 Wild for Airborne since he doesn’t have any applicable skills. While you can take any type of vehicle on any mission you choose, matching terrain types can pay great dividends!
The RAM motorcycle is another vehicle that can be extremely useful in the right situation. With room for just a single Joe, you may think it’s utility limited, but pair it with Stalker, and it will allow you to roll 8 dice on a land mission using Tracker, OR Martial Arts! This combo actually ends up with 9 dice for Recon missions, since ANY Joe can get +1 Wild skill if they aren’t using any of their skills.
On the other hand, sometimes you don’t have a scalpel like the Skystriker or RAM available to you. For situations like that there’s the APC. With no special ability at all, but space for EIGHT Joes, the APC doesn’t rely on you bringing the right tool for the job, it just brings the whole toolbox! Even with no special abilities, 8 basic Joes (that each automatically contribute +1 wild skill) can still roll a whopping eight dice, more than enough to take down many missions in the game. Throw in some Joes with matching skills and that’s a lot of dice!
These are just a few of the vehicles and Joes available in the G.I. JOE Deck-Building Game. Choosing the best vehicle for the mission will greatly improve your chances of stopping Cobra in their tracks and saving the day, but remember, each time you use one of these powerful assets (other than the VAMP), it will go to your discard pile and need to be cycled through for use again, so you’ll be well-served in recruiting a variety of vehicles.
