What Are Post-Project Updates About?

This article is part of a series on crowdfunding, explaining the steps and what backers should expect along the way.

During a crowdfunding campaign updates are normally fairly regular. They’re often filled with exciting things like stretch goal unlocks, milestone celebrations, and hype about the project.

This can make the post-project updates seem uninteresting since once the campaign has ended you as backer already know what you’re getting as part of your pledge.

However, post-campaign updates are often some of the most important updates of the campaign and as a backer you should be reading them to make sure you’re not missing any important information.

Post-project updates often include things like:

  • Pledge Manager details
  • Backer Survey details
  • How to contact the creator of the project
  • How to upgrade or add-on to your pledge
  • Updates on the main body of the project, such as writing samples, manufacturing updates, and previews
  • Changes made to the project like upgrades or bonuses
  • Shipping information like when fulfillment starts or if there are delays
  • Progress of fulfillment
  • Steps to take if there is an issue of any kind with your pledge

After you’ve received your pledge the updates may become non-existent, however many creators will also post an update if they are crowdfunding a new project that they feel will have a similar audience- a new expansion for the game, a new chapter in a series, or even promoting a new project that they feel their backers will find interesting.

Most crowdfunding platforms will allow you to opt out of email notifications for a project if you feel that they are not relevant to you or you are no longer following the project, since many updates are still visible to backers on the project page you can always check there for up-to-date information. I recommend not opting out of emails until you’ve received all parts of your pledge, to make sure you have the most current information.

The next step of the process is normally shipping, which we’ll cover in the next Crowdfunding Column Expanded article. Thanks so much for joining me and feel free to send any questions or article suggestions to Kickstarter@RenegadeGames.com
